the queen

In my humble estimation this is the queen of all flowers - the peony.

'Tis reason enough to live in a cold clime, if once a year for a week or two, you are rewarded with peony blossoms, heavy and beautiful, and as large as salad plates.

This is peony, "Sarah Bernhardt".

Mmmmmm....I can smell the heady fragrance. The way it envelopes your entire being with one wiff. It is an aroma that evokes memories of childhood.

Interestingly enough, several asian cultures refer to the Peony as "the KING of flowers". But I agree with you, that it has a more female grandeur to it than male. My zone must be a little ahead of yours, as outpeonies peaked a few weeks ago. My own peony post from June 1:

Hi, I don't think I have visited your blog before but wanted to say the Peony Rose is among my favourite of flowers they are quite stunning. The blooms on mine are just fading now.

Knew it had to be a female. Just too lovely to be male.

Zanne,
I've got a bunch in my yard that were just beautiful this year. My uncle planted them, and he's gone now. So it is very special to me when they bloom.

I have that one! And it is gorgeous. The scent is just wonderful. My grandmother had tons of peonies on the side of her house, in all colors.

Mine bloomed all at once and a massive storm just massacred them. :(

Did you know they come in yellow now!?
